Metro Detroit traffic can be frustrating, especially for those who have to commute to work in rush hour. It seems like I-75 is always under construction, 696 is the stuff of nightmares, and the surface streets don’t offer much of an alternative in the way of congestion.
One of the top complaints that people have about living in Southeast Michigan is the traffic. A 10-mile drive can easily become a one-hour commute… which adds two full hours to your workday!
Or maybe traffic isn’t so bad where you live, but your drive still takes forever because of how far away your job is.
Whatever the case, the good news is that you don’t have to keep suffering through ridiculous work commutes. Here are some ideas to make your drive-time more efficient.
Ride Your Bike
If your long commute is due to bad traffic, riding your bike can sometimes be faster. Plus, this will also help you get your morning exercise. Just remember to bring a change of clothes to work!
Take Public Transportation
If you live in a part of Metro Detroit that allows for easy public transportation or ride sharing, then you might give it a try and see if it’s any faster. Even if it takes the same amount of time, without the hassle of being behind the wheel, you can at least read a book or answer emails on your laptop to get a jump start on your workday.
Changing jobs might seem too drastic just because of a long commute, but if it’ll save you two or three hours per day in driving time? Well, maybe it’s worth it. Think of what you could do with all that time: More family dinners, more free time during Michigan’s short winter daylight hours, or more sleep!
