Setting Up A Home Office

More Metro Detroiters are working from home than ever before!

And as fun as working from home can be (pajamas all day, anyone?), it also has its challenges.

Maybe, for instance, your home doesn’t have room for an office and so you’re working at the kitchen table, in the guest room, or even in your bedroom.

Meanwhile, the kids are running around the house and constantly asking you for snacks – especially when you’re in a Zoom meeting.

It would be nice to have some private office space in your home, wouldn’t it? If you’re nodding your head “yes,” here are a few tips!

Separate Yourself

The bigger your family is, the more private your office should be so you can focus on your work – and keep your life well-balanced. Choose to set up your office space in a room where household noise is at a distance, and put a lock on the door! If you’ve carved a corner out of an existing room, try a folding screen to divide the space so you can become more “invisible” to your family during work hours, and so you can hide your computer (and to-do lists) from yourself when work hours are over. You want to establish a clear boundary for your workspace so you can truly relax at the end of the day.

Invest in a Chair

An ergonomic chair is probably the most important part of your home office, so don’t hesitate to spend a little extra money. You’ll be sitting in it for hours every day, and you’ll be much happier if you’re comfortable.

Make It Your Own

Ideally, you want to look forward to working in your home office, so make it your own and personalize it. Use a paint color that you love, hang up pictures that motivate you, and set it up with a separate coffee pot and maybe a mini-fridge – whatever will keep you from venturing into the distractions of the rest of your house.

Get a View

There’s nothing like having a good view from your office. If possible, choose a room in the house that has a window. The sun can give you a boost, and you’ll know when afternoon approaches by the change in natural light.

Hope that helps!
